Key Features to Consider
Not all snow blowers are created the same. With design differences that go beyond unique brand features, there are a number of key features to consider as you shop for a new snow blower. If you’re unsure which type of snow blower is ideal for you, our team would be happy to help you make an informed decision when you contact us or give us a call at (651) 439-2035.
Power Source
While most snow blowers are powered by a gasoline engine, there are some electric-powered models with either a battery or power cord. Gas-powered snow blowers generally provide better snow-clearing power.
Clearing Width
How large is your driveway? A wider snow blower may cost and weigh more, but the added clearing width means you can make fewer passes to clear your driveway. However, if you have more cramped spaces to clear, a smaller and more maneuverable clearing width may be a better choice for you.
Wheels vs. Tracks
Depending on whether you choose a single-stage or multi-stage model, you may be able to choose between either wheels or tracks behind the auger. Single-stage snow blowers are generally lighter and come with wheels, but these wheels are not powered by the engine. Multi-stage snow blowers are larger and heavier and may be found with either wheels or tracks that are powered by the engine. Wheeled snow blowers are easier to maneuver, especially on curved sidewalks or as you turn to clear another swath on the driveway. Tracks — like those on an excavator or tank — help power up steep slopes or through heavy drifts, but may be more difficult to maneuver.
Single Stage vs. Multi Stage
The first key question you’ll want to answer as you’re shopping for a new snow blower is whether a single-stage or multi-stage model has the power you need. Snow blowers pick up snow using a corkscrew-shaped auger and toss the snow out a chute at the top of the machine. In a single-stage snow blower, the auger is the only force propelling the snow out of the chute. With a dual-stage snow blower, an impeller fan helps push more snow out the chute. An accelerator in a three-stage snow blower works with the auger and impeller to create a powerful snow-hurling machine.
A single-stage snow blower may be sufficient for smaller sidewalks or paved driveways, but for deep snow, wet snow, or larger driveways, a multi stage snowblower provides power and performance you’ll appreciate, especially if you have a large driveway or particularly drift-prone space. Additionally, a dual-stage snow blower is a better choice for gravel driveways since the auger doesn’t scrape the ground — this means you’ll spend less time raking gravel out of your lawn in the spring.
